The Cyclist

Film based on an incident witnessed by
Makhmalbaf at the age of ten. He recreates the fact exactly as
it occurred, but allows himself a more optimistic finale to the
small tragedy. Nasim, an Afghan refugee must pay for his wife's
medical treatment.
In order to get the money to do so, he
decides he will make a bet: prove he is able to pedal his
bicycle for a week without stopping. A number of people bet on
Nasim and follow him on his course. The most important factor,
however, is his son, that acts as a strong incentive to his
struggle.
Elenco/Cast: Moharram Zeynalzadeh,
Esmail Soltanian, Mohamad Reza Maleki, Makhmalbad
Col., 75 minutes, 1989

The Peddler
A surrealist film told in three episodes,
much reminiscent of Italian neorealism. The first story shows a
poverty-stricken couple trying to find anyone who will adopt
their newborn daughter. In the second, a man who is
ridicularized by his neighbors has only his mother to count on
for companionship. In the last, a boy who is suspect of having
betrayed his drug-dealer companions is marked to die.
Elenco/Com: Zohreh Sarmadi, Esmail
Sarmadian, Behzad Behzadpoor, and Morteza Zarrabi.
Col., 95 minutes, 1985.

Once Upon a Time, Cinema
An Iranian king with 84 wives and 200
children is categorically against cinemas, regarding it as
perdition. Until one day he goes to the movies and the
unforeseen occurs: he falls in love with the heroine of the
film, as if by magic. Now confused, he will have no more of his
kingdom, and much less of his wives and children.
He hankers only for the sight he saw on a
movie screen. To be close to the love of his life, the king does
not think twice: he decides to be an actor. With a Chaplinesque
touch, the film is a touching tribute to movie-making, with a
wealth of magic and poetry.
Elenco/Cast: Ezzatollah Entezami,
Mehdi Hashemi
